LUKE 5:4-11

4. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ``Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." 5. Simon answered and said, ``Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets." 6. When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7. so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 8. But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, ``Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!" 9. For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10. and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, ``Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men." 11. When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

13. ``Surely God will not listen to an empty cry, Nor will the Almighty regard it. 14. ``How much less when you say you do not behold Him, The case is before Him, and you must wait for Him!

TODAY'S ADVENT READING - JOHN 1:1-18

1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2. He was in the beginning with God. 3. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6. There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. 8. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. 9. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15. John testified about Him and cried out, saying, ``This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" 16. For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

TODAY'S ADVENT READING - MATTHEW 2:19-23

19. But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20. ``Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead." 21. So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, 23. and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: ``He shall be called a Nazarene."

TODAY'S ADVENT READING - MATTHEW 2:13-18

13. Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ``Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." 14. So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15. He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: ``OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON." 16. Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17. Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: 18. ``A VOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH, WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING, RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN; AND SHE REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED, BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE."

TODAY'S ADVENT READING - MATTHEW 2:1-12

1. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2. ``Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." 3. When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5. They said to him, ``In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6. `AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'" 7. Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, ``Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him." 9. After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11. After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12. And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.

TODAY'S ADVENT READING - LUKE 2:36-40

36. And there was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37. and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers. 38. At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39. When they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city of Nazareth. 40. The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
